Prospective Students

Welcome! Im glad you are interested in Computer Science at Deering. Computer science is a great field to enter these days and job prospects are strong. In addition, even those not going into computer fields will find the knowledge relevant and the logic useful in any career.

We are fortunate to offer two classes to prospective students in this field:

Intro to Computer Programming

This course will introduce students to programming through the use of the Java programming language. This class will be hands on with students given the opportunity to create games and applications of their own design.

AP Computer Science

We are the ONLY school in the Portland area to offer an AP Computer Science class. This course which generally follows the intro class is the equivalent of a College-level Computer Science class. At the end of the class, all students will take the Advanced Placement (AP) test. Most colleges will give students college credit for passing this test. This means that the student can by pass the first computer science class in college and be able to take more interesting and challenging material. After the test, we have around 1 month which we will do some pretty awesome things.

Both of these classes are available to any sophmore, junior or senior. Students that complete AP Computer Science can (and often) go on to take more advanced classes at USM (classes are heavily discounted for Deering students).
